Thirty-five years ago this month, Mendocino Coast District Hospital opened its doors. The very existence of MCDH is due to a hard-working group of community members who had a vision for a full-service hospital on the coast.
In January 1967, following two years of effort driven by the Fort Bragg Rotary Club, the Mendocino Coast Health Care District was formed. In December of that year voters approved a major bond issue for financing the construction of the new facility.
The combined efforts of hundreds of Mendocino Coast residents, including a very dedicated group of Auxiliary volunteers who did a significant amount of fund raising, led to the successful construction of MCDH. The facility cost $2,500,000 to build over a six-year period, which culminated in the dedication of the new facility on June 26, 1971.
MCDH is celebrating its 35th Birthday with a Health Fair, open to all, on Saturday, June 24 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the hospital. The event will feature free health screenings, healthy food, and fun activities for kids and families.
Among the offerings at the Health Fair:
- Free Health Screenings, including blood pressure, blood glucose, hearing screenings, respiratory function, physical therapy range-of-motion, oxygen saturation, body composition, and more
- A Born-at-MCDH Reunion, with a group photo at 11:00a.m. sponsored by the OB Department
- Expired medication disposal, sponsored by the Pharmacy Department
- Personal Medication Cards – free!
- How to develop your Personal Health Record
- Discount coupons from the Billing Department
Also, we will have fun activities for kids and families, including ambulance, fire truck, Coast Guard beach truck and helicopter tours, horse-drawn wagon rides, and games. In addition to a selection of healthy foods, the birthday celebration would not be complete without birthday cake and ice cream.
Please join more than 30 hospital departments and services, medical staff, emergency responders, Mendocino Coast Clinics and College of the Redwoods at the MCDH 35th Birthday Celebration and Health Fair.
