MCDH launches landscaping project, seeks community participation

6/1/06

Mendocino Coast District Hospital has launched its Cultivating Community Health landscaping project and is enlisting community support to realize its goal of landscaping the area surrounding the new Patient Services Building.

The Cultivating Community Health project falls in the tradition of a previous community effort: 35 years ago, when the hospital opened in 1971, community volunteers completely landscaped the hospital campus.  This year as the hospital has looked for creative ways to save money, several community members suggested that the needed landscaping be approached as a community project.  Cultivating Community Health is the hospital’s response to make that suggestion a reality.

Since March of this year, MCDH has sought donations of plants, soil amendments, irrigation supplies and volunteer labor from wholesale and retail nurseries, gardening clubs and civic groups.  The response has been very positive, and the ground preparation work is well underway, headed by the talented groundskeeper Terry Knaus.

Financial contributions are now needed to ensure the project’s success.  Sponsorship-level gifts are available at the following levels: $250 “Tillers,” $500 “Sowers,” $1,000 “Gardeners,” and $2,500 “Cultivators,” and will be recognized with a permanent plaque and public recognition.

Gifts of $25 or greater in honor or in memory of a friend or loved one are a wonderful way to create a lasting tribute to a loved one.  These gifts will be publicly recognized in the hospital’s newsletter Update and posted in the hospital.  Gifts of any size are welcome.

All gifts are tax-deductible, and will be placed in a special-purpose fund at the Hospital Foundation to be used exclusively to support Cultivating Community Health.   Donations may be sent to MCDH – Landscaping, 700 River Drive, Fort Bragg, CA 95437.  For more information, contact Gus Killion, Plant Maintenance Manager, at (707) 961-4678.
